Recommended that you go through Between the Testaments at the beginning and then again at the end of the course. Read through the appropriate text book below.
High School: Read 1 Maccabees.
College Level: Read through the Apocrypha. (The New Oxford Annotated Apocrypha)

Complimentary Text Books: Extra Credit
The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English (Paperback) by Geza Vermes published by Penguin Classics in 2004. (about $13.60 on www.amazon.com). College Text book. Read the introduction, a Biblical commentary like Habakkuk, and pick a sectarian writing like the Manual of Discipline or The War of the Sons of Light with the Sons of Darkness to read.
