Hazael King of Damascus Recreation

Hazael King of Damascus Recreation
Hazael King of Damascus Recreation. It is made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone (7 1/2 inches tall by 2 3/4 inches wide). This piece is based on the actual carving found as part of a booty cache at a remote outpost known as Arslan Tash in Syria. Hazael was mentioned several times in the biblical old testament and contemporaneous Assyrian inscriptions. He ruled for 42 years (842-800 B.C.) as a powerful king of Aram with a variety of military campaigns against foes including Israel and Assyrian forces. In this rare depiction he wears a long robe with fine tassle stitching on the hem. He stands in a typical pose of the era appearing full frontal except for the Egyptian style profile shown on sandled feet. A woven plant motif creates a decorative border and Is a mild reference to fertility.
